Who We Are

The 5 W’s is an independent online news publication founded in 2026. We focus on one specific gap in the modern media landscape: the important story that gets published but not read.

Our name comes from the five fundamental questions of journalism: Who, What, When, Where, and Why. We believe every significant news event deserves a clear answer to each of those questions. Too often, complex or under-reported stories are buried beneath breaking news alerts, political punditry, or click-driven headlines. We dig them back up.

We are not a wire service. We are not a blog. We are a small team of writers and editors committed to producing one thing: fact-based, balanced, and actionable news articles on topics that affect real people but receive less attention than they deserve.

What We Do

Each article on The 5 W’s follows a standardized, transparent structure:

A headline and subheadline that state the news clearly.
A dateline and summary that tells you where and when it happened.
The Essentials: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How – a quick-reference section answering the core questions.
Case background – the necessary context, in plain language.
Arguments in favor and against – we do not take sides. We present the best arguments from each perspective, supported by sources.
Why this matters to the average person – the practical impact on your life, your money, or your community.
Sources – fully cited and linked where possible.

We do not use anonymous sources. We do not publish opinions labeled as news. We do not exaggerate or sensationalize.

Why We Started

The idea for The 5 W’s came from a simple observation: every day, major news outlets publish dozens of important stories that vanish within hours. A federal judge blocks sanctions – covered once, then forgotten. A 45,000-worker strike threatens the global AI chip supply – reported in trade journals, never explained to general readers. The FDA approves a home-use drug that could change millions of lives – announced in a press release, then buried.

These are not obscure stories. They are under-covered stories. They have a direct impact on your rights, your healthcare, your job, or your wallet. But they lack the constant drama of political scandals or celebrity news.

We started The 5 W’s to give those stories a permanent home – and to give readers a reliable way to understand them without spin or bias.

Our Editorial Standards

Accuracy. We verify every factual claim against primary sources (court rulings, FDA announcements, company statements, academic papers) or, where necessary, against multiple secondary sources. We correct errors promptly and transparently.

Balance. For every disputed issue, we present the strongest arguments from each side. We do not cherry-pick weak arguments to make one side look foolish. We do not omit strong counterarguments.

Clarity. We write for a general reader – not for specialists, not for pundits. Jargon is explained. Complex processes are broken down into steps. The five W’s are always answered upfront.

Transparency. Every article ends with a full list of sources. We do not use anonymous sourcing. Our bylines are real. Our publication date and update history are visible.

Independence. We are not owned by any corporation, political party, or advocacy group. We do not accept paid placements or sponsored content. Our only revenue, if any, will come from reader support – never from advertisers who might influence our coverage.

What We Do Not Cover

We do not cover:

Breaking news that is already widely and competently covered (e.g., election night results, major natural disasters).
Celebrity gossip or sports scores – unless they intersect with a significant public policy or legal issue.
Punditry or opinion – we report what happened and what people are arguing about it. We do not tell you what to think.
Stories without a clear “why it matters” – if we cannot explain why a reader should care, we do not publish it.
